FDIC Chairman Sheila Bair is predicting that the bank failure rate will increase tenfold, according to a U.S. Senator. Bair said up to 500 more banks could fail, Sen. Jim Bunning, R-Ky, said in a meeting, reported Dow Jones Newswires. That would put the current crisis close to the level achieved during the late-1980s savings and loan crisis, when 745 thrifts were shut. "She told us that unless something dramatic happens, we could lose up to 500 more banks," Bunning said. "That means that people who make mortgages in local places .... people that could really help in a foreclosure will not be there," Bunning said. MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Troops shelled the compound of an Islamist sect blamed for days of violence in northern Nigeria then attacked its mosque, killing at least 100 militants in a fierce battle.
Sect leader Mohammed Yusuf escaped along with about 300 followers but his deputy was killed in Wednesday night's bombardment, according to Army commander Maj. Gen. Saleh Maina.
The army was conducting a house-to-house manhunt Thursday on the outskirts of Maiduguri for Yusuf and his followers.
An AP reporter watched soldiers shoot their way into the mosque in Maiduguri on Wednesday and then rake those holed up inside with gunfire. The reporter later counted about 50 bodies inside the building and another 50 in the courtyard outside. The militants were armed with homemade hunting rifles, bows and arrows and scimitars.
Another five corpses were just inside a large house near the mosque. Maina pointed to the body of a plump, bearded man and said it the Boko Haram sect's vice chairman, Bukar Shekau.
"The mission has been accomplished," said Maina, the army commander.
Militants seeking to impose Islamic Sharia law throughout this multi-religious country attacked police stations, churches, prisons and government buildings in a wave of violence that began Sunday in Borno state and quickly spread to three other states in mainly Muslim northern Nigeria.

Rules panel works through 600 amendments

The House Rules Committee is facing an unprecedented situation: It has to sift through more than 600 amendments to the 2010 defense appropriations bill.
Most of the amendments were submitted by Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who is protesting about 540 earmarks worth $1.3 billion that are going to companies without a competitive bidding process. A total of 606 amendments were submitted, the most Rules has ever encountered, according to a spokesman for the panel. I might have to send this guy a thank you card!
“This unprecedented number of amendments put a huge strain on the hardworking staff, who had to review, collate and summarize every single one,” said Vincent Morris, the communications director for the House Rules Committee. Awwwwwwwwww!
Rules is expected to meet Tuesday afternoon to decide which amendments will make it when the House takes up the mammoth Pentagon spending bill, and it could be in for a long session.
Flake’s barrage has led to a frustrating situation on the committee, creating an even deeper divide between Democrats and the GOP over the floor debate process. Each amendment has to be read in order for the committee to decide which ones to select for floor consideration. My question is why isn't the basic legislation required to be read? How the hell is it legal, or even tolerated, that lawmakers are voting on stuff they haven't even read!
Staff and lawmakers on the committee have been working nonstop since Friday, when the amendments started pouring in. The cutoff was Monday at 3 p.m., and staff had to work overnight, according to a congressional source. So what if some of those parasites had to work late! We The People are asked to LIVE with the consequences of their laws. By God they OUGHT to be working late!
“Although we always welcome input on every piece of legislation that comes to Rules, if the committee were to give Republicans the opportunity to debate and vote on every single one of their amendments, we would be here past Christmas,” Morris said. Hmmmm let's avoid "debate" at all costs eh? Wonder why.

A heretofore "unknown" 2004 interview with Barack Obama by leftwing radio host Randi Rhodes has just emerged.
And basically, as you shall hear, Obama is saying do as I say, not as I do. In this case he was referring to quickly forcing legislation through congress. As you can hear in this interview, the hypocrisy seems so massive that it is destined to go viral on the Web. It features Randi Rhodes back during her Air America days interviewing then senator-elect Barack Obama on November 22, 2004.
And despite the fact that Randi is currently pretty well hidden from public view, you can be sure she will soon be talked about again because of her inadvertent exposure of incredible hypocrisy on the part of Obama. And what was the hypocrisy? His complaint that the Bush administration was rushing legislation through congress without giving the legislators time to read the bills or allowing for much debate.
